If people were lucky enough to get food stamps, they might be able to purchase one of the buck chuck turkeys, or items to pull together one dinner for family. One dinner folks, not a months’ worth of food. If people don’t have families, that might take them thru the end of the month, not beyond. But since beef is so high, chicken, not a lot better, bird is what’s for dinner. If they manage to freeze some of the meat, it can be used later, or if they are willing to forgo the Rockwell image, grind some raw turkey breast for other meals, a meat loaf, pasta sauce. They can make soup. Some will do those things, most won’t. They want the Rockwell image of dad coming to the table with the whole bird, and a table groaning with food.
